Viet United stay top of league with win against GI and Friends

Best in the league, Viet United was set to take on 5th placed, GI and Friends. Viet United were the only unbeaten remaining and in the midst of a three game win streak. Meanwhile, GI and Friends were starting to pick up pace, having won two of their last three games.

In the 5th minute, Viet United got the first goal of the game after Nguyen’s original pass towards goal was denied but followed up with a tap-in in front of goal. GI and Friends came close to equalizing following a free kick but the ball was played high over the bar. Viet United doubled their lead in the 10th minute after Tinh took on multiple GI defenders and slotted the ball into the net. Tinh got his 2nd consecutive goal following a nice string of passes to get him right in front of goal in the 15th minute. Phan added Viet United’s final goal of the first half in the 20th minute after the goalkeeper was wandering and Phan had an open net to score in. Khorshidi was shown a yellow card in the 24th minute after a late challenge and Viet United went into half-time with the 4-0 lead.

To begin the 2nd half, GI and Friends had multiple chances to get on the scoresheet but were still left shut out. In the 34th minute, Phoutthavongsa was found all alone in front of goal to score his first of the game. Another wander by the goalkeeper in the 42nd minute caused a scurry in the penalty box leading to another Viet United goal courtesy of Tinh — his 4th. A minute later, GI and Friends’ offensive pressure finally paid off. Chaal scored from a corner to get GI and Friends on the board. With the full-time whistle nearing, the energy of the game started to dwindle until Viet United made their last mark on the game from Phoutthavongsa’s shot from inside the penalty box. The final score: 8-1.

Viet United once again dominated a game to only further their position at the top of the league. With four goals within 20 minutes, due to their tenacity and clinical play, they practically put the game out of reach before the first half ended. Although this is a disappointing result for GI and Friends, they are yet to be shut out, having scored at least once in every game. They’re clear from the bottom of the table and for now, sit firmly in 5th place.
