League opener sees Cúventus run through to 8-2 win

Cúventus has defeated the team of UBC Individuals by the score of 8-2 in the opening game of the season. Led by Hale’s hat-trick and four goals in each half, Cúventus swept by their opponents to become the first team to pick up three points.

Cúventus came out attacking as they notched their first goal within three minutes. Lacey received the ball all alone in the opposition half and hit the ball first time to score the team’s first goal of the season. From the goal on, Cúventus remained on the attack and then doubled their lead before tripling it in the 21st minute. Will Condon found himself in great scoring position for a tap-in goal and a long range strike to increase the Cúventus lead to 3-0. At the brink of half-time, Donoghue added one more goal for the leaders. The defense made it all too easy for Donoghue to be unmarked right in front of the net and he calmly slotted the ball past the keeper. Cúventus led by 4 goals to nil at the end of the first half.

Similar to the first half, Cúventus kept their foot on the gas while applying pressure to the UBC Individuals’ defense. In the 29th minute, Stephen Tuohy intercepted the ball in front of the net which led to him having an open lane to place the ball into the net for Cúventus’ 5th goal. Following Tuohy’s goal, Cúventus were red hot on the attack as they had plenty of chances but none were put away until the 43rd minute. Lacey’s 2nd goal came following a goal kick to where he put on a few dribble moves before coolly scoring.

However, Cúventus’ scoring spree was interrupted by two consecutive UBC Individual goals by Hale in the 45th and 46th minute. Hale managed to find the back of the net from long range as a result of a corner for the first and from a goalkeeper mishap for the second.

Although, both of those goals were canceled out as Cúventus scored two more goals in the final minutes of the game. Immediately from kick-off following the opposition’s goal, Donoghue got in front of goal to score perhaps the easiest goal of the night. Lacey capped off his hat-trick while 1-on-1 with the keeper to secure the 8-2 win for Cúventus.

The first game of the new season did not disappoint as 10 goals were scored amongst the two teams. Cúventus comfortably start the season with a win and get ahead of the pack meanwhile UBC Individuals will look to put this loss behind them and will search for points in the next game.
