Cookie Monsters see first three points and score seven

The Cookie Monsters finally picked up their first win after dropping the first two games. They defeated Burnaby Offside FC 7-5 in the third matchweek of the season.

The Cookie Monsters got off to an extremely quick start with Chelsea Novak scoring with the very first shot of the game. A shot from outside the penalty area caught the entire defense and the goalkeeper off guard to open up a 1-0 lead. Less than a minute later, Tenzin Cheme doubled the lead. They slowly but surely entered the half and Cheme had an easy finish right in front of goal. Burnaby Offside FC answered back with their first goal in the 9th minute, scored by Henry Kasimir. A quick free kick was played to him as he was right in front of the net and he easily tapped it in.

Burnaby Offside FC equalized in the 18th minute and then took the lead in the 20th minute. The equalizer was scored by Diana Pastora following a corner where she was wide open and the ball squeezed past multiple defenders into the net. The go-ahead goal was scored by Amer Qureshi following a 2-on-1 counter where he put the ball into an empty net. Two minutes later, Syed Mahboob equalized for The Cookie Monsters when he dribbled from his half to Burnaby’s half and drilled a shot into the heart of the goalkeeper and into the net. After a first half filled with a lot of goals, the team’s were level at 3-3 at half-time.

Out of the break, The Cookie Monsters tallied the first four goals of the second half, three scored by Mahboob and one by Novak. In the 26th minute, Mahboob drilled a shot into the corner to jump out to a 4-3 lead. Three minutes later, Novak was left unmarked and she had the easy job of putting the ball into the goal. Mahboob scored two more goals to extend the lead to 7-3 and bring his game total to four goals.

In the 41st and 50th minute, Qureshi and Theo Boucherie added two consecutive goals to cut the deficit to 7-5 but it proved to be too little too late. Qureshi’s second goal was a wild shot that someone slipped through the fingers of the keeper in what should’ve been an easy catch. Boucherie’s goal was an easy tap-in for the final imprint on the game.

A back-and-forth game saw The Cookie Monsters take their first three points of the season, entering the top three. In contrast, Burnaby Offside FC remain without a win, having lost their first two games.
